    Universiade Village

    The 2011 Shenzhen Universiade Village would open on August 1 next year, a government meeting was told on Monday. The main buildings of the village occupying an area of 492,000 square meters in Longgang District have been completed. The village has zones for accommodation, operations, international and logistics support.

    

    Toxic gas kills three

    Production at a manganese* plant in the Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region was suspended after toxic gas* killed three and poisoned 21 others on Thursday morning.

    Production at Tianyuan Manganese Corp. in Zhongning County was halted at midday Thursday so an investigation could go ahead.

    

    School vehicle accident

    The death toll from a school vehicle accident in Central China’s Hunan Province has risen to 14 after four injured children died in hospital and the one missing was also found dead, local authorities said.

    A three-wheeler taking primary school children to school plunged* into a creek at 7:30 a.m. in Songjiang Township, Hengyang City, on Monday, leaving nine children dead at the scene, said a spokesman with the city government’s information office.

    

    New Metro fares

    Shenzhen announced new Metro line fares on Thursday, adopting a mode combining an initial price with a distance price.

    According to the new plan, the initial price is 2 yuan (US$0.29) for the first 4 kilometers. A passenger has to pay an additional 1 yuan for every 4 kilometers between 4 and 12 kilometers, and an additional 1 yuan every six kilometers between 12 and 24 kilometers.
