    Metro line

    The Metro Line 4 extension* has started a test run and is due to go into operation by the end of June, according to the Shenzhen branch of HK-based MTR Corp., the operator of Line 4.

    The 16-kilometer northward extension line starts from the Children’s Palace Station in Futian District and ends at the Qinghu Station in Bao’an Ditrict.

    

    Former cop gets 3 years

    A former traffic police officer was sentenced to three years in prison on Friday for causing the death of a retired soldier while driving under the influence of alcohol.

    Wang Fengli, a former traffic police officer in Guangming New Zone, was taken into custody* on January 13 last year, nearly two weeks after the accident that killed Zou Weixian, 24, a former frontier soldier who worked at a factory in Longhua Subdistrict, Bao’an District.

    

    Salt market

    The Ministry of Commerce said on Sunday that panic* buying of salt prompted by fears of radiation* from Japan’s crippled* nuclear power plant had stopped and the market was back to normal.

    The ministry said that since Saturday, stocks of salt were abundant nationwide and sales had dropped substantially.

    

    Academic leaders

    Shenzhen University planned to recruit 20 to 30 leading academics from around the world in the next five years, the university said on Monday.

    Annual salaries would be between US$100,000 and US$200,000 and sometimes more if world renowned scholars were willing to come, said university president Zhang Bigong.
