1. Royal wedding

Monaco's ruler Prince Albert married South African swimmer Charlene Wittstock on Saturday in a ceremony attended by a who's who* of European royalty and the international elite*.

The 53-year-old married Wittstock, 33, in the courtyard of his palace at the foot of a vast white-marble double staircase lined with white flowers. Some 3,500 guests sat outside to watch the service on giant TV screens.

2. 'Billions worth' of treasure

A treasure trove* of gold and silver jewelry, coins and precious stones said to be worth billions of U.S. dollars has been found in a Hindu temple in southern India, officials said on Saturday.

The valuables have an estimated preliminary* worth of over 500 billion rupees (US$11.2 billion), said Kerala Chief Secretary K. Jayakumar.

The treasure has been kept in at least five underground vaults* at the Sree Padmanabhaswamy Temple which is renowned for its intricate* sculptures.

3. Thai election

Thailand's military eased concerns of renewed turmoil* on Monday by accepting the sweeping electoral win of toppled* ex-premier Thaksin Shinawatra's party, while his sister Yingluck Shinawatra vowed to reconcile the deeply divided nation as its first female prime minister.

4. Gadhafi warrant

The body representing nations in Africa called on its members to disregard* the International Criminal Court's arrest warrant* for Moammar Gadhafi, an official confirmed on Saturday, in a move that seriously weakens the tribunal's ability to bring the embattled* Libyan leader to justice.

5. Strauss-Kahn released

A New York judge released former head of the International Monetary Fund Dominique Strauss-Kahn from house arrest* on Friday after prosecutors presented evidence questioning the credibility* of his accuser.

Strauss-Kahn's lawyers said the alleged victim told "substantial lies about her own background and the facts of this case."

 

6. S. Korea shooting

A corporal* in South Korea's marine corps went on shooting rampage* on Monday, killing four fellow marines and wounding another on a Yellow Sea island base near the country's tense border with North Korea, officials said.

7. Aid to North Korea

The European Union (EU) said on Monday it would restart food aid to North Korea after the country's government agreed to an unprecedented monitoring system as it suffers through its worst food crisis in years.

The EU will send euro10 million (US$14.5 million) in food aid to North Korea, after food production in the country hit a new low and an EU mission of experts confirmed a growing hunger crisis in northern and eastern provinces. An unusually cold winter and other severe weather conditions have diminished recent harvests in North Korea.
