Party's 90th anniversary

The Communist Party of China (CPC) observed its 90th anniversary on Friday, with President Hu Jintao saying socialism is essential to "decent lives" for China's people.

Speaking in Beijing as grand celebrations marked the anniversary throughout the country, Hu, who is also Party general secretary, said the CPC completed the new-democratic revolution, winning national independence, completed the socialist revolution and implemented a great new revolution of reform and opening up while developing socialism with Chinese characteristics*.

Income tax

A total of 1.7 million people in Shenzhen will be exempt* from paying income tax after an amendment* raising the monthly tax threshold* from 2,000 yuan (US$307.7) to 3,500 yuan takes effect in September.

The adjusted threshold is 500 yuan more than the amount originally proposed in a previous draft of the amendment.

Shenzhen residents whose monthly income -- after pensions, insurance and provident fund payments are deducted -- ranges between 8,000-12,500 yuan will benefit most from the amendment. Tax payers in this bracket would be eligible for an exemption of 480 yuan a month.

Truck, bus smash

Police in Hubei Province confirmed that 23 people died after a rear-end collision* on Monday.

The accident occurred at about 3:50 a.m. when a long-distance sleeper coach was rear-ended by a truck on the Xiantao section of the Suizhou-Yueyang Expressway, the spokesman said.

Dameisha visitor limits

Dameisha beach in eastern Shenzhen will restrict the number of visitors to a maximum of 10,000 from yesterday until August 23.

The restriction is to ensure security for the 2011 National Beach Volleyball Tournament (Shenzhen leg) and Universiade beach volleyball competition to be played there. The Shenzhen leg of the national tournament will be played between July 8-10.

Police will impose traffic controls on roads to Dameisha. Vehicles without permits will be restricted from entering the area during the Universiade.
