Hong Kong University has enrolled a total of 291 mainland middle school graduates, according to an announcement by the school.

Among the enrolled students, there are 17 top scorers in the national college entrance examinations in their provinces or cities, who have received the coveted HK$480,000 scholarship from the university.

In addition, around half of the enrolled students had exam scores that were in the top three in their area.

Twelve of the enrolled students scored 100% in their mathematic tests.

More than 10 students won the first prize in the national Olympic mathematics competition and some even gave up the opportunity to enter mainland universities by not sitting the national exams.

Hong Kong University received this year a total of 10,362 applications from mainland students from 31 provinces, cities and autonomous regions. More than 40 applicants were top scorers in their areas.

The university also enrolled students from Inner Mongolia, Qinghai, Ningxia, Gansu, Xinjiang and Tibet for the first time.
