MOST Yangcheng Lake hairy crabs sold in Shenzhen were not from Yangcheng Lake in Jiangsu Province, Thursday’s Shenzhen Economic Daily reported.
Harvesting of hairy crabs from Yangcheng Lake would start Saturday, said Yang Weilong, president of the Yangcheng Lake Hairy Crab Association.
In a market in Nanshan District, many so-called “Yangcheng Lake hairy crabs” were selling for about 100 yuan (US$16) per 500 grams. “They were all taken from Yangcheng Lake, but might not be as good as the real Yangcheng Lake hairy crabs as they were in the lake for a shorter time than the real ones. Those genuine Yangcheng Lake hairy crabs would be sold at more than 200 yuan per 500 grams,” said a crab seller in the market.
Most of the crabs were tied up with regular string, but Yang said the real hairy crabs from the lake were all tied up with specially-made environmental protection strings.
“All the so-called Yangcheng Lake hairy crabs in Shenzhen were from Anhui Province. These were put into the lake temporarily before being sold,” said an unidentified hairy crab retailer in Nanshan District.
Genuine labels could be bought from crab retailers and online sellers for about 1 yuan each. “Some people wanted to give the crabs as gifts and we also offer this service,” said the retailers.
However, Yang said designs of this year’s anti-fake labels would not be announced Friday and the government would only give them to the associations who then would give them to their member companies.
Prices of Yangcheng Lake hairy crab were expected to increase due to the reduction of water in the lake. The total production volume of the lake would not be more than 2,000 tons this year. “Due to this and bad weather, the real Yangcheng Lake crabs were on the market one month later than usual. Therefore, buyers should make a booking one week in advance if they want to buy large amounts of the crabs,” said a crab retailer surnamed Zheng at Futian Farm Produce Market. (Wang Yuanyuan)
