Military training necessary or not?

新生军训有无必要? 网友热议有弹有赞

University freshmen across the country have started their military training.

More than 6,000 freshmen of Shenzhen's universities were sent to three military bases across the province last Thursday.

As they were about to leave, Zhang Bigong, president of Shenzhen University, announced the university planned to rearrange military training to winter in future so that students did not have to train in such high temperature.

A 15-year-old middle school student in Shenzhen died recently during routine military training. Heat exhaustion is suspected as being the cause of death.

The tragedy has reopened the debate as to whether compulsory military training is necessary in the modern age.

Students and netizens have complained that it is a waste of time and resources.

"It is said that the training can improve students' fitness, work ethic and team ethic, but I don't think that a mere 10 days of training can achieve this," said Moneyo, a netizen who had just graduated from a university in Shanghai.

For many students, military training was the hardest time in their school life.

"It was exhausting, standing directly under the sun for hours, running for miles and doing all that strenuous exercise, which had nothing to do with our futures. I know this training can teach us the meaning of hard work, but it is after all only ten days," said Wang Rulin, a student at Shenzhen University.

However, some students disagree.

"Military training is a big challenge for us. It is also a great bonding exercise. My classmates and friends grew much closer together during the training in high school and university," Zhong Qiongyu, a senior at Shenzhen University.

Some thought the training also provided a good chance for students to experience something new.

"We had spent most of our childhoods in class or doing homework. We did not know each other yet at the time. But we close by the end of it, and had learnt much about life from the officers and NCOs. It was draining, but it was only 10 days," said Wu Qing, a student at Shenzhen University.

At present, military training is still mandatory at universities, but the most important thing was students' safety, said president Zhang.

"Although there have been no fatal accidents at Shenzhen University, there have been many at other universities in the past 20 years. Today, many students' are too weak to endure the training, particularly in the heat, so the university was planning to move it to winter vacation," said Zhang.
