Centenary of 1911 Revolution

China held a grand ceremony to commemorate the centennial* anniversary of the 1911 Revolution, which terminated* 2,000 years of imperial rule, on Sunday morning at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing.

The 1911 Revolution, or Xinhai Revolution, which began on October 10, 1911 with an armed uprising, ended one of the longest autocratic* rules in the world established by Emperor Qinshihuang in B.C. 221 by toppling* the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911) and establishing a republican government, the first in Asia.

President Hu Jintao, former President Jiang Zemin and other leaders attended the ceremony.

Universiade Village

The Universiade Village, home to more than 12,000 athletes and officials from more than 120 countries and regions during the Games between August 12 and 23, has welcome new residents. This time, they are not athletes or officials, but new students of the Shenzhen Institute of Information Technology (SIIT).

The end of the Universiade has opened a new chapter for the Universiade Village, which has been renovated as part of the new campus of the SIIT. As many as 4,000 new students registered to start their higher education at those modern facilities.

4.29m tourists visit SZ

Shenzhen welcomed more than 4.29 million tourists during the recent seven-day National Day holidays, only a 1.18 percent increase on last year, according to the city's tourism office.

The city is the fourth most popular among domestic tourists during the holidays, behind Shanghai, Beijing and Guangzhou, according to a survey by China Tourism Academy and Ctrip, one of the most popular travel agencies in the country.

Tianjin highway crash

Friday's highway traffic accident in the northern municipality* of Tianjin has left 35 dead and 20 injured, according to a press conference held on Saturday.

Most of the victims are university students. Six of the injured are in a critical condition while the remaining 14 are stable.

A work team organized by the State Administration of Work Safety and the Ministry of Public Security has been sent to Tianjin to investigate the accident and deal with the aftermath.
