A GROUP of sculptures by a French artist displayed during the opening ceremony of the UFE (Union des Francais de l’Etranger) office in Shenzhen, on March 15 at the Grand Mercure Ginza hotel, caught many people’s attention and led to the extraordinary discovery of an expat’s fondness for traditional Oriental culture. Stepping into Christel Re-Trotemann’s home in Shekou, you might have the misconception that you’re in a Chinese local’s house. The trove of furniture and fine decorations are all in traditional Chinese style. A cross-stitch embroidery of peonies, a Buddha statue and a Thai ornament exhibit the owner’s deep Oriental cultural influence. Re-Trotemann has been interested in Chinese calligraphy since childhood. When she came to Shenzhen almost three years ago with her husband, she soon fell in love with her new home and became immersed in the joy of her new life and Shenzhen’s artistic creativity. Her passion for life in foreign lands is transferred into unique artistic creations. A self-taught sculptor, she worked in a sculpture studio for two years in Bangkok, Thailand, and held a sculpture exhibition in 2009. She’s preparing to hold another exhibition in Shenzhen.
