Supermarket in probe for expired food
     2012-April-17  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

SUPERMARKET chain Renrenle is being investigated by the city’s market supervision administration for selling expired food.

The general manger of the Longzhu branch of the supermarket in Longgang District admitted selling expired food Sunday, saying they would accept the government’s punishment, yesterday’s Southern Metropolis Daily reported.

According to a preliminary investigation by the administration, the store did sell expired food, such as sesame oil and dried squid slices, and the administration is examining the other food at the store. Customers have accused the supermarket of selling expired products including ham, candy and beer, the newspaper said.

“I bought some chocolate biscuits, dried squid slices and sesame oil Friday and my child got diarrhea. I checked the food carefully and found it had all had expired,” a customer surnamed Fan told the newspaper Friday.

However, when journalists from the newspaper came to investigate the food Friday, they were beaten by staff of the supermarket who thought they were thieves, the newspaper said.

“They hit the two men in the chest, saying, ‘If you come to steal again we will detain you.’ They also tried to put the products into their bags. We thought it was strange but later we found that the two men were journalists,” said a customer surnamed Li.

The newspaper said the staff continued denying selling expired products, saying the reporters were trying to frame them.

“They kept arguing for hours until I arrived. I told the police and the administration about how I found the expired food and told the newspaper and they finally stopped yelling,” said Fan.

The staff members who beat the reporters were taken away by police to Luogang police station for investigation.

“We had received several reports of the Longzhu branch selling expired products. It was unavoidable because there are too many products in the supermarket. We will tighten our management measures and are willing to compensate the injured reporters,” said an official from the company’s marketing department Saturday.
