Shenzhen’s roadside guardians
    2012-09-13  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

Shenzhen enjoys a reputation as a “Garden City,” and won the “Nations in Bloom” international honor in 2001, due to the emphasis placed on greenery in its urban planning.

When the Shenzhen Special Economic Zone was founded thirty years ago, its greenery coverage was only 10 percent. Since then, trees of numerous species have been planted to increase the city’s eco-diversity as well as make it more picturesque.

According to statistics released by the Shenzhen Municipal Urban Management Bureau by the end of 2011, over 45 percent of Shenzhen is covered by greenery and it will expand to 50 percent by 2020.

As well as being ornamental, roadside trees improve the air by absorbing the exhaust fumes discharged from vehicles. They also reduce wind speed during storms.

As a coastal city that is prone to be hit by typhoons in summer, much thought goes into which trees to plant and where to plant them. (Zhao Jie)
