Experience a green Futian
    2012-11-16  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

Futian District is inviting local expats to visit a nature park and green track and gain a better understanding of the district’s developments in ecological protection on a Nov. 24 tour that offers free lunch and transportation. The event is the second of three free tours that the district government and Shenzhen Daily are organizing for expats. The third tour is scheduled for Dec. 8.

Two stops

The national mangrove nature reserve is on the northeast coast of Shenzhen Bay and covers 368 hectares, including a 9-kilometer coastline. There are 194 bird species at the reserve, including 23 endangered species, such as platalea minor and Sounders’ gull. More than 100,000 migrant birds rest at the bay each year, making the reserve a “transfer station” for migrant birds in the Eastern Hemisphere. The tour will lead you to a mangrove and bird protection zone that is normally not open to the public.

The hiking and cycling track in Meilin covers about 12.5 kilometers and is part of Shenzhen’s expanding network of green tracks and trails. Located in Meilin Subdistrict, the path starts at Meilin Reservoir and ends at the border of Futian and Nanshan districts, marked by a colorful graffiti wall. A variety of plants lines the sides of the track, which workers started building in 2010 and completed last year. Tour participants will be invited to ride bikes on the track.

Time: 9 a.m. to noon, Nov. 24. Free lunch will be offered at the end of the tour.

Transportation: A free bus will pick up participants at the south gate of the Shenzhen Press Tower on Shennan Boulevard, Futian District, between 8:50 and 9 a.m. Nov. 24.

Reservations: Expats interested in taking a free tour of outdoor recreation and nature sites in Futian District on Nov. 24 can reserve a spot by e-mailing szdaily@126.com by Nov. 23, or by dialing 8351-9022 or 138-0227-2205 to contact Linda Peng from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.
