Mainland student raped in HK
     2013-June-4  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

A SOUTH ASIAN worker was arrested Sunday morning, hours after he allegedly raped a Chinese mainland university student in a hostel in Chung-king Mansions in Tsim Sha Tsui in Kowloon, Hong Kong.

The 26-year-old suspect, reported to be Indian, is said to be seeking political asylum and has been living in the territory for several years, working as a deliveryman in Chungking Mansions. His nationality was not confirmed by Hong Kong police.

The unidentified victim, a 21-year-old from a well-known university in Beijing, was visiting Hong Kong with a female friend and staying in one of the many guesthouses that provide cheap accommodation. Communal bathrooms are a feature of many cheap hostels in the area.

Police said the student had just finished showering in a bathroom reserved for women at around midnight Saturday when, returning to her room clad only in a towel, she left the door ajar for her roommate, who left for a shower.

The suspect allegedly passed the room while making a delivery, saw the student, broke into the room and then attacked, gagged and raped her, police said.

He didn’t leave until he heard the victim’s roommate coming back from the bathroom, and the roommate called police, police said.

All exits of the building were cordoned off as officers checked security footage and conducted a door-to-door search immediately after receiving the call.

The suspect, who was also staying in the building, was arrested at 4:50 a.m. Sunday.

The student was sent to Queen Elizabeth Hospital for treatment.

The case is under further investigation.

Police said the victim had previously visited Hong Kong and usually stayed at Chung-king Mansions.

The 17-story building spanning five blocks on Nathan Road was originally a residential block when built in 1961. Now, after more than five decades of use, it has become well-known as nearly the cheapest accommodation in Hong Kong. It’s made up of many independent low-budget hotels, shops and other services. It often acts as a large gathering place for ethnic minorities in Hong Kong, guest workers, mainlanders, local Chinese, tourists and backpackers.

From time to time, police officers and immigration officers check the identity of people inside the building to crack down on drug-trafficking, overstaying and other criminal offenses. (Mu Zi)
