A Catholic Sunday afternoon celebrated in Futian
    2013-06-06  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

Eric Wong, an Australian expatriate, attended a regular Sunday Mass, in English, with hundreds of Catholics at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church of Shenzhen on May 26.

Despite a long commute from the city of Huizhou, where he works, to the church’s location on Nonglin Road in Futian District, Wong has spent nearly every Sunday afternoon with other churchgoers — mainly English speakers — for the past five years.

A friend of Wong once recommended the church to him, he said, and helped him blend in with the group. Now a member of the church’s choir, Wong has to spend more time with his fellows but said he is “very relaxed and happy.”

“We have around 20 singers from more than five countries and regions in the choir,” he said, introducing the group to Shenzhen Daily. “I usually come an hour early, before the Mass (held from 2 to 3 p.m.), because we need to rehearse the hymns that will be sung.”

Since the church made the English-language Mass a fixture in April 2009, it has hosted hundreds of thousands of Catholic expats. Li Kefei, secretary for the church’s priest, said 400 to 500 people fill the church during English-language Mass at peak times.(Tan Yifan)
