    Food poisoning

FORTY-EIGHT workers were hospitalized with suspected food poisoning Monday after eating in a factory in Songgang Subdistrict, Bao’an District.

Some of the workers suffered symptoms including dizziness and vomiting after having breakfast in the canteen of Japanese-funded A&D Electronics (Shenzhen) Co.

Hospital tests showed that three of them suffered acute gastroenteritis. The other 45 had only slight conditions and were discharged after observation.

The workers said they all ate dumplings in the canteen, which had been outsourced to a restaurant company for operation.

    Lucky woman

A 60-YEAR-OLD woman won 20.73 million yuan (US$3.37 million) Sunday in the Double Color Ball lottery.

The woman, a Shekou resident surnamed Zhang, said she has bought lottery tickets for years and would use the money to help her son start a business and get married.

    Traffic increases

THE average speed of vehicles on the city’s major roads during evening rush hours dropped to slower than 26 kilometers per hour in May, a drop of 8.8 percent from May 2012, according to a traffic report Shenzhen’s transport commission released Monday.

The report mainly attributed the slowing speeds to traffic impacts from Metro construction projects across the city.

    Drug smuggling

SHENZHEN Customs uncovered 12 drug smuggling cases in the first five months of this year, seizing 37.2 kilograms of drugs, including heroin and ketamine, Customs officers said yesterday.

Customs arrested 11 smuggling suspects, including Chinese and foreigners, in the five-month period.
