An escape to the world’s best autumn scenery
    2013-11-04  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

HUANGSHAN Mountain was recently listed as one of the World’s Best 10 Places to See Autumn Colors by Lonely Planet, the largest travel guide publisher in the world. It is the only Chinese location on the list, and the mountain’s renowned wispy clouds give it a particularly ethereal, Chinese atmosphere. The range’s dizzying peaks are covered with trees that turn a beautiful, bright red throughout autumn. So why not take a short trip this autumn to view the season in all its glory?

    Four wonders

Located in southern Anhui Province, Huangshan Mountain covers an area of 1,200 square kilometers, of which 154 square kilometers have scenic attractions. Its landscape features four wonders: imposing peaks, spectacular rocks, odd-shaped pines, and a sea of clouds.

It boasts 72 peaks, reaching over 1,000 meters above the sea level, with three main peaks rising majestically. They are both fascinating and dangerously steep. Cliffs, stone forests, stone pillars, stone blocks and egg-shaped stones form the unique granite scenery.

The pines on the mountain are tall and have fascinating shapes. The famous 1,500-year-old Yingke Pine (Welcoming Guests Pine) is the most popular and must-see spot in the mountain.

For thousands of years, the mountain has been a popular spot for tourists, scholars, and political figures. Many well-known ancient scholars and political figures left their inscriptions on rocks in the mountain. There are also temples and pavilions.

In 1990 the mountain was listed as a UNESCO world heritage site.

    Autumn sceneries

Autumn is the best time to visit Huangshan Mountain, due to the beautiful weather and fascinating colors.

The blue sky, white clouds, red maples and yellow fruits make the whole mountain area a colorful fairyland. Compared with the spring, which is like a bud ready to bloom, autumn is the flower showing its final beauty before withering. Having enjoyed the fall in Huangshan Mountain, you will believe that the scenery of traditional Chinese paintings does indeed exist here on earth.

Places such as Xihai Canyon, Sanhua Rock, Hotspring Area, Cloud Area, and Pine Area are all great places to observe the autumn colors at Huangshan Mountain.

The No.1 peak of the mountain, Lianhua Peak (Lotus Peak), reopened to visitors in April 2010. As the highest spot on the mountain, you can “stand” above all the other peaks and enjoy a great and magnificent view of the mountain in autumn.

Cloud sea is the No.1 wonder at Huangshan Mountain. The beautiful white clouds make the mountain look just like a fairyland. Cloud Area and Cloud Canyon Area are the best two places to witness the beautiful cloud sea.(Wang Yuanyuan)

    Tips

Autumn at Huangshan Mountain is much cooler than Shenzhen, with an average temperature of about 10 to 11 degrees Celsius. There are also big differences between daytime and nighttime, so visitors are encouraged to bring thick clothes when spending nights in the area.

Regular visits to the mountain often take two days to see all the major sceneries, so it is better to book rooms at hotels or local inns in the mountain area before entering the mountain.

There is a wide selection of hostels and inns run by local farmers in the mountain area. The average price for a twin room is about 200 yuan (US$32) per night. Most of the inns also provide meals.

Huangshan Mountain is always a good place for hiking and climbing, but for those who prefer a comfortable and safe journey, the sightseeing cable cars may be an ideal choice for enjoying as many beautiful views as possible.

The cuisine in Huangshan City area is also very popular. There is a snack street in the city where one can try traditional Anhui dishes. Recommended dishes include bamboo shoot stew, stinky tofu, smelly fish and dumplings stuffed with winter melons.

    Transport

Take a train from Shenzhen to Huangshan at Shenzhen Railway Station in Luohu District. The whole journey takes about 19 hours.
