Pompeii
Singer: Bastille
I was left to my own devices
Many days fell away with nothing to show
And the walls kept tumbling down
In the city that we love
Great clouds roll over the hills
Bringing darkness from above
But if you close your eyes,
Does it almost feel like
Nothing changed at all?
And if you close your eyes,
Does it almost feel like
You’ve been here before?
How am I gonna be an optimist about this?
We were caught up and lost in all of our vices
In your pose as the dust settles around us
And the walls kept tumbling down
In the city that we love
Rain clouds roll over the hills
Bringing darkness from above
But if you close your eyes,
Does it almost feel like
Nothing changed at all?
And if you close your eyes,
Does it almost feel like
You’ve been here before?
How am I gonna be an optimist about this?
Oh where do we begin?
The rubble or our sins?
Oh where do we begin?
The rubble or our sins?
And the walls kept tumbling down
In the city that we love
Rain clouds roll over the hills
Bringing darkness from above

Background
“Pompeii” is a song by British alternative rock band Bastille, from their debut studio album “Bad Blood” (2013). Lyrically, the song is inspired by the Roman town known by the same name, which met its fate with the eruption of Mount Vesuvius.
Dan Smith’s lowing tone rolls over glowing synthesizers in one of the brightest synth-pop songs you’ve probably heard. From the frenetic pop of the chords, you know this earworm is going to stay in your mind. The song features in the trailer for the 2014 animated film “Mr. Peabody & Sherman.”
