Exploring romantic Jiangnan in springtime (I)
    2014-04-14  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

Jiangnan is an area that is south of the lower reaches of the Yangtze River, including the Yangtze Delta. Its rivers, bridges, ancient townships, folk customs and beautiful natural sceneries have always served as inspiration for traditional Chinese painters.

    Nanjing, Jiangsu Province

As the capital of Jiangsu Province, Nanjing is famous for its long history and delicious food. It served as the capital for six dynasties and has always attracted scholars, poets and writers.

The Confucius Temple area is the liveliest place along the inner Qinhuai River, the “mother river” of Nanjiang. It is now a national scenic area, open to the public for free. The area has been historically known as the cream of Qinhuai River, integrating natural sceneries, gardens, temples, local snacks, and traditional streets.

The Sun Yat-sen Mausoleum is another must-go place in Nanjing. Covering an area of 80,000 square meters, the mausoleum is located in the beautiful Zijin Mountain Scenic Area in the east of Nanjing. Sun was a great forerunner of the Chinese democratic revolution and is known as the father of the Republic of China. Built in 1926, the whole scenic area represents an alarm bell as seen from the air, symbolizing the noble spirit and heroic efforts of Sun for the Chinese people. It is regarded as the most outstanding mausoleum in China’s modern architectural history.

Transport: Fly to Nanjing from Shenzhen airport.

    Yangzhou, Jiangsu Province

Yangzhou is an elegant city in the confluence of the Yangtze River and the Grand Canal in southern Jiangsu Province with a brilliant history of 2,480 years.

It has been without doubt a fascinating symbol of natural beauty in China ever since ancient times. It is famous for its rainy spring days, with waterscapes, tasteful landscaped gardens and various architectures in magnificent or simple, delicate styles.

Slender West Lake is always seen as the “soul of natural beauty” in Yangzhou. Like a long, wide ribbon, its beauty lies in the rippling waters, winding dikes, arching bridges, dancing willows and colorful flowers along the bank.

Jinshan Temple is another landmark place in Yangzhou. A lot of Chinese myths are set at the temple and there are many paintings and calligraphies by well-known ancient Chinese artists and scholars of it as well.

Other must-see places in Yangzhou include Ge Garden and Daming Temple.

Transport: Fly to Yangzhou from Shenzhen airport.
