    Chok (擢)

    zhuó

    Meaning:

"Chok" is a new word popular among youngsters in Hong Kong and Guangdong Province. Its Chinese homophone is "擢" but is less frequently used than "chok."

The word was first used in 2009 in Hong Kong fashion magazines to describe people who look cool and fashionable.

In "The Mysteries of Love," a Hong Kong TV drama in 2010, Raymond Lam played a physician, whose good looks made fans choke, hence the word "chok" becoming popular.

    Example:

    A: 林峯昨晚在TVB万千星辉颁奖典礼上的造型真是好chok。

Lín Fēng zuówǎn zài TVB Wànqiān Xīnghuī Bānjiǎng Diǎnlǐ shàng de zàoxíng zhēnshì hǎo chok。

Raymond Lam was so chok at the TVB Anniversary Gala last night.

    B: 是的。他说chok不仅仅是一种样貌,而是一种自信, 在适当的时候表达出来,不是随便就chok的。

Shìde。Tā shuō chok bù jǐnjǐn shì yì zhǒng yàngmào,érshì yì zhǒng zìxìn, zài shìdàng de shíhòu biǎodá chūlái,búshì suíbiàn jiù chok de。

Yes. He said chok did not just mean handsome but also being able to present a confident demeanor at the appropriate time. People could not be chok all of the time.
