Guard detained for assaulting reporters
     2014-April-18  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

A SECURITY guard surnamed Tan was detained for assaulting TV reporters and damaging property after violently confronting the journalists as they attempted to investigate reports of animal abuse, police said.

Li, 19, and Cao, 20, security guards assigned to Futian People’s Hospital, visited Futian Police Station on Wednesday and apologized for their actions.

Video clips provided by residents revealed the two guards Tuesday binding a stray cat with tape, raising it from ground as it struggled, pulling it across the floor, and hanging the helpless animal from a nearby potted tree.

Cao denied that he abused the cat, saying he just played with it. Cao said he later released the cat into the hospital’s greenbelt.

Police said Tan was detained for assaulting the reporters and damaging Shenzhen TV’s video cameras. If the damage reaches 5,000 yuan (US$806), Tan could face criminal charges.

Shenzhen Mingzhe Property Management, which hired the guards for security service at the hospital, said it would compensate the broadcaster for the damage.  (Han Ximin)
