Smuggled goods found in parking lot

SHENZHEN Customs officers seized smuggled goods worth more than 800,000 yuan (US$129,000) from an underground parking garage in Luohu District on Wednesday night, customs announced Thursday.

Seized products included popular brands of baby formula, shampoos, diapers, medicines, wines, cosmetics and food. The customs officers used eight trucks to haul the goods from the garage.

    Twenty-one suspected smugglers were detained.

The suspects allegedly purchased undeclared goods from inbound travelers and Hong Kong traders on the square in front of Luohu Checkpoint. Using electric bikes, bikes and tricycles, they transported the goods to the parking garage of Xinyinzuo Mansion, about 300 meters from the checkpoint, customs officials said.

The goods were stored in nine enclosed spaces on the second and third underground floors of the garage. The spaces belonged to local merchants and online retailers selling Hong Kong-sourced products.

The anti-smuggling department of Luohu Customs has conducted 12 raids this year, seizing smuggled goods worth more than 1.6 million yuan, including electronic devices, baby products and food.

The department pledged further crackdowns on smuggling and continued patrols in the surrounding area of Luohu Checkpoint.
