Soccer field doubles as golf-driving range
     2014-April-24  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

A SOCCER field belonging to Shenzhen Sports Center in Futian District was leased out to serve as a driving range for golfers, and not all nearby residents are happy about it.

A company known as Dasheng Sports converted the field into a golf-driving range, with contiguous facilities selling food, tea and golf products. The fee is 100 yuan (US$16) to drive 100 golf balls. A membership card costs between 3,500 and 11,000 yuan, according to Tuesday’s report by Shenzhen Economic Daily.

The facility has so far drawn more than 500 members and realized a robust volume of business.

“The field used to be for soccer training for teenagers in the morning. Amateur soccer teams came to play in the afternoon,” said a man surnamed Lin, who lives nearby and sometimes played soccer there with friends. Lin said such a public facility should not serve the interest of a private company.

The city government spent more than 10 million yuan renovating the facility before the Universiade in 2011, using it as an auxiliary practice facility backing up the larger soccer stadium in the sports center.

“A sport facility has to have a major soccer pitch [field] and an auxiliary one to be eligible for hosting a high-level international sports event,” said a longtime manager of sports facilities identified only as Liu.

Liu Tong, project manager of the sports center, said the center leased out the field in order to cover deficits in maintaining the field. The turf maintenance costs between 400,000 and 500,000 yuan a year, however, leasing of the pitch to soccer players only generated a yearly income of between 300,000 and 400,000 yuan, according to Liu.

“We reached a consensus with Dasheng Sports that the pitch’s function as an auxiliary soccer facility won’t be changed. The track in the pitch opens to residents for free between 6 a.m. and 8 a.m. each day. In addition, the pitch will be used as a practice facility when there is an international sports event,” said Liu.

The sports center may use the pitch 30 days each year, according to Liu.

A manager of Dasheng Sports, Gao Shang, said that compared to a soccer field, a driving range has a higher requirement for turf quality.

Gao said turf maintenance is done each quarter.
