Discover ancient villages in GZ
    2014-04-28  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

SINCE the May Day holiday is coming, it’s time to pack up your bag and set off for another journey. If you are not a fan of long trips, why not try a quiet getaway in a local rural village? Here are some recommended ancient villages in the neighboring Guangzhou area.Liaocai Village,

    Baiyun District

Situated in the north of Guangzhou, Liaocai Village is known as the most beautiful village in Baiyun District because of its beautiful rainbow-like scenic area “flower sea.”

A new garden was recently built in the village. Covering an area of 2 hectares, flowers in seven colors were planted in the village. It also has a 13-hectare rose garden with roses in different colors, making the village a romantic place for couples.

The village is also a traditional Guangdong-style village with a large number of traditional rural houses and Cantonese delicacies. Other must-go spots in the area include Nanshan Ancient Temple and Liuxi River.

Transport: Drive to the village via Guangzhou-Shenzhen Expressway and Zhonggang Boulevard.

    Cycling track,

    Huangpu District

Huangpu District has 103 kilometers of cycling tracks. Along the tracks, 12 historical spots and city landscapes are recommended for those who enjoy heart-pumping adventures.

Located in Miaotou Village, the Nanhai Temple (also known as South China Sea Temple) was a temple for ancient Chinese to hold sacrificial ceremonies for the sea. In ancient China, there were four temples, which were located in the East, South, West and North China respectively. However, the Nanhai Temple, with a history of more than 1,400 years, is the only one that still stands.

Whampoa Military Academy is another must-go place in Huangpu District. Opening in 1924 by the Kuomintang (KMT), it was a military academy of the Republic of China that produced many prestigious commanders. Chiang Kai-shek was once the president of the academy, while well-known Chinese politician Zhou Enlai was the head of the Politics Department.

Transport: Drive to Guangzhou University Town via Guangzhou-Shenzhen Expressway, South China Expressway, Huazhou Road West, Huazhou Road East and Xiaozhoubian Bridge. Rent a bicycle at the University Town.

    Hongshan Village,

    Huadu District

Also located north of Guangzhou, Hongshan Village is a traditional Hakka village with rich natural resources.

Spring is the most popular time to visit the village since the rape flowers are in full bloom; in the summer time, many people come to the village for water fun by the river.

Most of the tourism facilities are free to visitors, including Peach Blossom Island Park, an ancient drum tower and mill wheels.

The other must-see spot is the Wangzi Mountain Forest Park, which is called “Jiuzhaigou in Guangzhou.”

Traditional Hakka-style delicacies made by local villagers are also recommended.

Transport: Drive to the village via Guangzhou-Shenzhen Expressway, Neihuan Road, Airport Road, and Guangzhou-Huadu Road.

    Tangkeng Village,

    Nansha

Built in 1398, Tangkeng Village is one of the oldest villages in Nansha area in Guangzhou.

There are many temples and towers in the village. Among these, a Tianhou Temple is a must-see as it is the largest and earliest Tianhou Temple in Guangzhou.

Other recommended places in the area include Puzhou Garden, Nansha Coastal Park, Hengdang Islands, and Nanshan Wetland Park.

Transport: Drive to the village via Guangzhou-Shenzhen Expressway, South China Expressway, Nansha Harbor Expressway, Nansha Boulevard and Huandao Road.
