    China, Russia sign gas deal

    China and Russia signed a long-awaited natural gas* supply deal in Shanghai on May 21.

    The contract signatures were witnessed by Chinese President Xi Jinping and visiting Russian leader Vladimir Putin, China National Petroleum Corp. (CNPC) said in a statement.

    “This is another major milestone achievement in Chinese-Russian strategic energy cooperation,” it said.

    The deal would see Russia supply 38 billion cubic meters of gas to China each year for 30 years under a contract valued in excess of* US$400 billion.

    

    Ex CEO of JPMorgan arrested

    Fang Fang, former CEO of JPMorgan Chase & Co.’s investment banking operations in China, was arrested by Hong Kong’s anti-graft* agency and could face legal charges in connection with the bank’s hiring practices.

    While it is not clear when Fang was taken in for questioning, he has been released on bail* and barred from leaving the country. The arrest could be linked to the practice of hiring of top Chinese officials’ children in order to secure business for the bank in the region.

    The 48-year-old banker resigned from the New York-based company in March.

    

    At least 31 killed, 94 injured

    A market attack in Urumqi, capital of the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, that left at least 31 dead and 94 injured on May 22 was an act of terrorist violence, according to authorities.

    Two vehicles, without license plates, broke through roadside fences and plowed* into people at an open air market at Park North Street near Renmin Park at 7:50 a.m. and explosive devices were set off.

    

    39 jailed for terrorism

    Thirty-nine people have been jailed for spreading audio clips and videos inciting* terrorism in the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region within the last two months, the regional higher court said on May 22.

    They received prison sentences of up to 15 years after being convicted of crimes including organizing and leading terrorist groups, inciting ethnic hatred, ethnic discrimination and the illegal manufacturing of guns.(SD-Agencies)
