    Chinese sue Canada

More than 1,300 Chinese millionaires have decided to take Canada’s immigration authorities* to court after Ottawa’s decision to terminate* its popular immigrant investor program earlier this year, which had previously attracted worldwide entrepreneurs and investors to Canada, China Daily reported on June 4.

Each applicant is seeking C$5 million (US$4.57 million) in compensation (2.5 times the amount of the application deposit) if the government refuses to assess their cases, according to the South China Morning Post. According to Tim Leahy, the Toronto lawyer representing the case, 1,335 of his 1,446 clients had submitted their immigration applications in Hong Kong.

Twenty-two people were killed in an accident at a coal mine in the southwestern municipality of Chongqing on June 2, media reported.

The accident at the Yanshitai coal mine in Chongqing’s Wansheng District occurred at around 5:40 p.m. and was described as a “gas incident” by local authorities, according to Xinhua.

    Exams set for injured students

Two students, who were badly injured while tackling a knife-wielding* attacker on a bus in Jiangxi Province on May 31, will be allowed to sit the college entrance exams once they have recovered, the Ministry of Education said on Saturday.

Liu Yanbing and Yi Zhengyong, both 17, were traveling on a bus in Yichun when a fellow passenger suddenly took out a knife and began slashing at people with it. Five people, including Liu and Yi, were injured, but the young men fought back and eventually managed to overcome the attacker and take away his weapon.(SD-Agencies)
