    1. At least 48 killed in Kenyan town

At least 48 people were killed when suspected Shebab militants* from Somalia stormed into* a Kenyan coastal town and launched a major assault on a police station, hotels and government offices, officials said on Monday.

The assault began around 8 p.m. local time on Sunday night as town residents were watching World Cup matches on TV.

Authorities blamed al-Shabab, Somalia’s al-Qaida-linked terror group for the attack.

    2. Santos re-elected Colombian president

President Juan Manuel Santos vowed to bring peace to Colombia after winning re-election on Sunday.

Santos got 53 percent of the votes for candidates, against 47 percent for right-wing challenger Oscar Ivan Zuluaga, the hand-picked* candidate of former two-term President Alvaro Uribe. More than 600,000 voters cast “blank” ballots, a protest vote for neither candidate.

    3. Russia cuts gas supply to Ukraine

Russia on Monday cut gas supplies to Ukraine as a payment deadline passed and negotiators failed to reach a deal on gas prices and unpaid bills.

The decision does not immediately affect the gas flow to Europe, but could disrupt the long-term energy supply to the region if the issue is not resolved.

Gazprom spokesman Sergei Kupriyanov said that since Ukraine had paid nothing for the gas by Monday, from now on the company would demand that Ukraine pay in advance for any future deliveries.

    4. Hamas militants behind abduction

Israel said on Sunday Hamas militants had abducted* three Israeli teenagers in the occupied West Bank.

The two 16-year-olds and a third man aged 19 disappeared on June 12 in the West Bank, where they were seminary* students in a Jewish settlement.

“Those who carried out the kidnapping of our youngsters are Hamas people,” Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu told his Cabinet, referring to the Palestinian Islamist group that has ruled the Gaza Strip.

    5. Japanese plea rejected

China on June 11 rejected Japan’s call for it to withdraw* an application to register records of Japan’s wartime sex slaves with UNESCO.

“We will not accept Japan’s unreasonable protest, and will not drop our application,” Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying said.

Earlier in the day, a Japanese Government spokesman said Tokyo had asked China to withdraw the application.

Hua said: “The aim of China’s application is to firmly bear history in mind and cherish peace, respect human dignity and prevent behaviors against humanity, human rights and human beings from happening again.”

    6. 400-kg giant caught in Canada

A 19-year-old angler* from Atlanta fishing with his father for the first time is the fourth person in less than two years to catch a giant Fraser River sturgeon* in Canada.

On Thursday, Paul Jarvis, and his dad, Don, were on the first day of a three-day father-son fishing trip when Paul hooked into one of the largest white sturgeons ever caught on the Fraser River.

The giant fish measured more than three-and-a-half meters long and one-and-a-half meters around in girth*. Its weight was 400 kilograms.

    7. Mayor leaves feces on neighbor’s walk

The mayor of the wealthy Southern California city of San Marino was under fire on June 10 after police said he was caught on camera apparently leaving a bag of dog feces* in his neighbor’s walkway.

Surveillance tape monitoring the exterior of the residence captured Mayor Dennis Kneier leaving what was said to be a bag of dog feces on a private walkway leading to his neighbor’s home.
