    Attackers killed in Xinjiang

Three knife-wielding* attackers were seized by civilians* and policemen in Hotan Prefecture of northwestern China’s Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region on Sunday.

Two of the attackers died while the third one was injured. Four civilians were injured in fighting with the attackers.

The three knife-wielding men rushed into a chess and card room in Yingbin Road at around 5:45 p.m. on Sunday and attacked people.

    Turtles predict World Cup

Enthusiasm for animal predictions for World Cup results was undiminished* in China.

Pictures were posted online on Sunday showing soccer fans who made their turtles pick leaves from a choice of team names written on scraps of paper.

Unlike Paul the Octopus, unfortunately, these turtles hardly gave correct predictions as they picked England, Japan and Spain as the winners.

    Couple sentenced for murder

A court in Northeast China’s Heilongjiang Province on Monday sentenced a husband and wife to death and life imprisonment*, respectively, in a rape and murder case.

Bai Yunjiang and his wife Tan Beibei were convicted of* intentional homicide*, attempted rape and robbery, the Jiamusi Intermediate People’s Court said in a verdict.

On July 24 last year, Tan, pregnant at the time, lured a 17-year-old girl, Hu Yixuan, to her home. The couple, who were arrested four days later, drugged Hu and attempted to rape her. Although the rape failed, the couple killed the girl and buried her in a rural area.

    Chemical plant shut

A chemical plant in Hunan Province has been closed down over suspicions that it caused the lead* poisoning of hundreds of local children.

Blood tests on more than 300 children in Dapu Township of Hengdong County found excessive levels of lead, indicating heavy metal poisoning.

The lead densities in their blood all exceeded the national standard of 100 micrograms per liter for children, with the tests revealing densities as high as 322 micrograms per liter.(SD-Agencies)
