    BOC accused of money laundering

A report that aired on July 9 by China Central Television (CCTV) accused Bank of China branches of laundering* money for Chinese citizens who plan to emigrate.

The broadcast showed footage* recorded by an undercover reporter at an emigration information conference at an unidentified five-star hotel near Beijing’s central business district.

In a brief clip, an employee from the Shuguang Xili branch of the Bank of China told the CCTV reporter the bank could exchange large sums of money at the same time, a violation of Chinese law.

Guo Meimei, who was at the center of a scandal in 2011 for using the Red Cross name for a private company, has been detained* for soccer gambling, Beijing police confirmed on July 10.

Guo, who was born in 1991 and grew up in Shenzhen, was arrested in Beijing on suspicion of* online soccer gambling during the World Cup in Brazil. Guo has confessed to the gambling and the case is under investigation, police said.

    $14.4b given in foreign aid

China provided 89.3 billion yuan (US$14.4 billion) in foreign aid* from 2009 to 2012, the State Council said on July 10.

The assistance went to 121 countries — 12 of them in Europe — it said in a report.

The total amounts to 0.06 percent of China’s combined GDP of 139 trillion yuan over the period, far below the 0.7 percent of GDP target set by the United Nations for developed nations.

    CCTV anchor detained

A leading anchor with China Central Television (CCTV) was taken away for investigation on July 11.

Rui Chenggang’s sudden departure left an empty seat beside his co-host when his show aired that night.

The 37-year-old Rui, who hosted the popular Economic News program, was taken away by prosecutors from his office on July 11.

Li Yong, deputy director of CCTV’s financial news channel, and another unnamed producer were also taken in for questioning.
