    1. Ukraine airstrike kills 11

An airstrike in eastern Ukraine sent an apartment building crumbling* to the ground on July 16, killing at least 11 people.

Rebels pinned* the attack on the Ukrainian air force. The government swiftly denied blame but was not immediately able to offer an alternative explanation.

The bombing in the rebel-held town of Snizhne demonstrated how airstrikes and heavy rocket fire are becoming increasingly common as the conflict drags into its fourth month.

    2. 2 arrested over Moscow metro crash

Two people have been arrested in connection with a metro train derailment* in Moscow that left 22 people dead and injured many more, Russia’s Investigative Committee said on July 16.

The pair arrested on suspicion of violating transport safety rules are a maintenance foreman*, Valery Bashkatov, and his assistant, Yury Gordov, a statement on the committee’s website said.

Three metro train cars derailed in a tunnel on July 15.

Two Chinese citizens were among the dead in the accident, Chinese embassy authorities said.

Some 160 people were injured, of whom more than 120 were hospitalized.

    3. Planes nearly collide in central Vietnam

Two planes nearly collided at an airport in central Vietnam after a young intern was left in charge of directing a busy runway, aviation authorities said on July 15.

An air traffic controller who left the trainee to supervise the runway at Danang on June 27 has been suspended and his aviation license has been revoked.

The intern instructed a Jetstar Pacific plane to take off from the same runway where a Vietnam Airlines plane had just landed.

    4. Rebels have taken all crash bodies

Pro-Russia separatists have spirited away* all 196 bodies that workers recovered from the Malaysia Airlines crash site to an unknown location, Ukraine’s emergency services said on Sunday.

A spokeswoman for the international monitors at the crash site, Iryna Gudyma, later said some of the bodies had been loaded onto trains in the rebel-held town of Torez, 15 kilometers from the crash site.

News reports of how the bodies had been decaying for days in the summer sun had ignited* outrage worldwide, especially from the Netherlands, home to over half the victims.

    5. Student ‘linked to jet shootdown’ arrested

A British student is a major player in Ukraine’s rebel group that is accused of shooting down the Malaysian jet MH17, killing 298 innocents, the Daily Mirror reported on Sunday.

Beness Aijo, 29, has been under house arrest in Latvia, where security sources say he is “a dangerous and influential individual,” the report said.

Aijo is a “major player” in the group and has close ties with its commander Igor Girkin, who is widely blamed for the atrocity* that killed 298 passengers and crew, it said.

Aijo — who has numerous convictions for violent political extremism — studied microbiology at London’s prestigious Birkbeck College.

    6. Boy, 9, renews vows with 62-yr-old bride

A 9-year-old schoolboy in South Africa has become one of the world’s youngest grooms for the second time — marrying his 62-year-old wife again.

Looking a little taller in last year’s silver tuxedo, baby-faced Saneie Masilela clutched the hand of Helen Shabangu as they repeated their vows one year on.

The second marriage ceremony was held at the home of the blushing bride in front of around 100 guests.

Last year the boy, from nearby Tshwane, tied the knot with bride Helen after claiming he had been told by his dead ancestors to wed.
