Beijing subway riders could be detained if they refuse checks
     2014-July-31  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

BEIJING subway passengers could face up to 10 days’ detention if they refuse to go through security checks, as the capital city beefs up such measures as more travelers visit the city during summer vacation, The Beijing News reported yesterday.

The city’s public security bureau said the highest level of security checks has been put in place with more than 10 million passengers using the subways daily this time of year.

Police dogs and armed police officers are patrolling major subway stations. All trash cans are under video surveillance and checked every 15 to 20 minutes.

Passengers are requested to go through both body checks and bag screenings in eight major subway stations. Elsewhere on the subway line, only bags are screened.

Since January, more than 120 passengers have been detained for taking dangerous items into subway stations, while over 30 have been punished for rejecting security checks.

Beijing police said more security staff and screening machines have been deployed to reduce waiting time.
