Ancient villages in modern Shenzhen (II)
    2014-08-25  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

AS a blooming metropolis in China, Shenzhen is known for its energetic and dynamic modern lifestyle. However, many people may not know that there are still some ancient villages in the city that have witnessed all the interesting changes the area has undergone. Here are more villages you can visit in the area for a trip back in time.

    Baguang Village,

    Longgang District

Located in Kuichong, Longgang District, Baguang Village is at the end of the Yanba Expressway. The village has 18 historical villages with a beautiful 16km coastline.

Known as one of the most beautiful villages in Shenzhen, Baguang Village still follows a traditional fishing lifestyle.

There are many ancient trees in the village. Among them, a type of heritiera is the most precious. It is said that the type of heritiera found in Baguang Village can now only be found in China, Japan and India. One of the heritiera trees is more than 300 years old. Banyan trees also inhabit the village. Many of the banyan trees are more than 100 years old, and the oldest has a history of 250 years.

The village is also a great place for water fun. As it is still one of Shenzhen’s best-kept secrets, very few people can be found on the village’s beaches, even during the weekend.

Ocean fishing is another popular activity in the village. You can rent a boat at Aozai Port in the village for around 300 yuan (US$47) per trip. The boats can also take you to the seafood restaurants built on the floating complexes in the middle of the sea.

One of the most well-known ancient structures in Shenzhen, Hehu New Residence, also lies in Longgang District. Known as Crane Lake Fortified Hakka Village, it is the largest grouping of Hakka residential buildings in the country. It has 179 homes, and each home has between one and three rooms.

Another recommended spot in the area is Qiniang Mountain, which is a popular place for hiking.

    Hesou Ancient Village,

    Dapeng New Area

Located about 900 meters away from the well-known Xichong Beach, Nan’ao Township, Hesou Ancient Village is one of the only remaining fishing villages in the city.

The village has a history of more than 600 years, and it has typical Cantonese-style buildings. Covering an area of around 20,000 square meters, there are now about 320 old houses in the village.

According to documents, the village was originally built by a family surnamed Liu about 600 years ago. Most of the buildings in the village now include traditional Cantonese-style buildings built in the 1970s, small bungalows built in the 1990s and small houses built in recent years.

There are two ancient mansions that used to be the homes of the two richest families in the village. The mansions are very well preserved and are open to the public as historical landmarks.

Xietian Palace is another must-see spot in the village. The palace was built in the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644). Inside the palace, there is a memorial stone with a detailed record of the village’s history. Another ancient stone was also found in the palace and is now exhibited at the Shenzhen Museum.

Besides fresh seafood, there are also many traditional delicacies you can try. Recommended takeaways include honey, roasted chicken, Artemisia leaf cakes and puddings.

Add: Hesou Ancient Village, Xichong Community, Nan’ao Subdistrict, Dapeng New Area (大鹏新区南澳街道办西涌社区鹤薮古村)
