Woman auctions long hair for charity

WITH her incredibly long, glossy hair, Xiao Ming always attracts people’s attention wherever she goes.

Now, however, she’s attracting it by getting rid of her mane for a good cause: she auctioned her hair online and will donate the money to a Guangdong-based educational foundation.

The 38-year-old woman said she decided to grow hair long after many people praised it for being smooth and glossy. After 15 years of growth, her hair is nearly 2 meters long.

The beautiful long hair makes Xiao eye-catching, but it also brings her trouble in everyday life. “Washing my hair is a big project and it takes nearly three hours to dry,” Xiao told Shenzhen Daily yesterday.

Xiao’s husband and parents share all the housework at home in an effort to protect her hair and hairdressers have to lean on the floor to trim it, she said.

Xiao said she has been split about the decision to cut her hair for a few years. She made some friends who are actively involved in charity after she started working at Peter F. Drucker NPO Learning Center. She got to know Longfei, a charitable team that auctions donated personal belongings to help people in need.

“So I made up my mind to auction it and donate the money,” Xiao said. “It’s a good destination for my hair.”

Liang Yongning, leader of the charitable team, started the auction, which had attracted widespread attention on Sina Weibo. The initial bidding price was 2,000 yuan (US$324) and the auction ended at 10 p.m. yesterday.

Five people bid for the hair and the highest bid was 20,000 yuan, offered by two bidders as of 5 p.m. yesterday, according to Liang.

He said one bidder plans to make the hair into wigs and donate them to people with cancer who lost their hair from chemotherapy.

The other bidder is an artist who plans to shoot a documentary about Xiao and her hair.

Liang said the hair would be given to the bidder who offers the highest price and the money will be donated to the Guangdong Baixi Education Foundation to help set up a reading room at a school in the Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region.
