Named funds a popular motivator for generosity
     2014-August-28  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

PEOPLE who donate 10,000 yuan (US$1,622) to Shenzhen Project Care Foundation can set up a fund named after them.

Initiated in April 2011, the foundation has received more than 87 million yuan in donations made by more than 600,000 people and organizations. The money is estimated to have helped about 1 million people in need.

In 2012, the foundation began allowing individuals, families or groups to have a fund named after them if they donate at least 10,000 yuan.

Those who donate 100,000 yuan and 1 million yuan will also be able to acquire various titles.

One hundred and sixty-two funds have been named after an individual or a family and 91 funds have been named after a group. The donations totaled more than 11 million yuan.

One boy named Kaiwen, who suffered from a rare liver disease, died after receiving donations, so his father donated the remaining money to the foundation and established a fund named after Kaiwen to help children suffering from accidents or diseases. The fund has donated 20,000 yuan to a boy with leukemia.

Local resident Chen Kaibao has a fund named after himself that is committed to helping poor students and the disabled. The fund gives 40 students 200 yuan a month each.

Chen recently started a new charity model. Instead of financing students, he helps their parents to get a job. He has helped the parents of a student surnamed Yang find jobs in Shenzhen.

The parents now earn nearly 10,000 yuan a month, more than enough to pay for Yang’s tuition and Yang’s paralyzed grandfather’s medical treatment.

Chen said three enterprises have joined him to help more people.

People who want to make donations to the foundation can call 8300-7557, 8351-9483 or 137-2347-7428. Every donation is recorded on www.igongyi.org.cn.
