Manslaughter
A MAN surnamed Zhou was recently arrested and charged with involuntary manslaughter.
Prosecutors in Bao’an District said Zhou, 49, a native of Guangdong Province, placed a chopping board in a precarious position on his 13th-floor balcony. It fell off the balcony Aug. 16 and hit a pedestrian who was passing by. The man died at the scene.
Official jailed
THE ex-Party chief of Baiyun District in Guangzhou was sentenced to 11 years and six months in jail for accepting bribes, according to a verdict made Friday by Shenzhen Intermediate People’s Court, who also announced they would be confiscating 600,000 yuan (US$97,320) of personal property in relation to the case.
The court said Gu Wenyao took 2.29 million yuan, HK$130,000 (US$16,770) and 14,400 pounds (US$23,869) in bribes and accepted 1 million yuan in company shares between 2003 and 2013 in exchange for promoting his subordinates and granting construction project contracts. Gu’s illegal income has been confiscated by the State treasury.
Airborne thief
A VETERAN thief was caught when Flight CZ6756 of China Southern Airlines landed at Shenzhen International Airport on Wednesday.
The crew of the flight from Dandong, Liaoning Province, to Shenzhen, was informed that a passenger, Wan Chunguo, was a high-risk thief.
During the flight, crew members videotaped Wan stealing from other passengers’ luggage and informed police on the ground.
When the plane landed, police caught Wan with 10,000 yuan he had stolen from another passenger, who was surprised to learn what had transpired.
Fitness promoted
HOLDERS of medical insurance cards whose balance has reached more than 5 percent of the average annual salary of employees for the previous year can use 10 percent of the money in their accounts to pay for fitness classes, according to Shenzhen Special Economic Zone Fitness Promotion Regulation, which has been endorsed by lawmakers Friday and will take effect in January next year.
Rape in elevator
A 55-YEAR-OLD man surnamed Wu was sentenced to three years in prison for raping his sister-in-law in an elevator, according to a verdict made by Longgang District People’s Court.
Wu drove his sister-in-law, surnamed Li, home to Henggang Subdistrict, Longgang District, in September last year. Li was reportedly heavily intoxicated when Wu took advantage of her inside the elevator.
