    1. More isolated in Spain for Ebola

Fears grew on October 7 that the Ebola epidemic* was spreading outside Africa after three more people were isolated in Spain following the infection* of a nurse in a Madrid hospital.

Tests confirmed that the nurse, 40, was the first person to contract the virus outside Africa.

    2. N. Korea leader Kim Jong Un reappears

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, shown using a cane for support, reappeared in state media on Monday after a lengthy public absence that had fuelled speculation over his health.

Several pictures on the front page of the Rodong Sinmun newspaper showed Kim smiling and gesturing on a visit to a housing development, although there was no indication which day the event took place. He was surrounded by aides* and wearing his signature dark buttoned suit, and appeared to be supporting himself with a black walking stick.

There have been no official reports on the 31-year-old Kim appearing in public since he attended a concert with his wife on September 3.

    3. Frenchman wins Nobel Prize in Literature

Patrick Modiano was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature, the world’s highest literary honor, on October 9.

The Swedish committee praised the 69-year-old French writer for “the art of memory with which he has evoked the most ungraspable* human destinies and uncovered the life-world of the occupation.”

Peter Englund, the permanent secretary of the Swedish Academy, recommended that readers unfamiliar with Modiano’s work begin with “Missing Person” (“Rue des boutiques obscures”).

    4. Ebola patient diagnosed in U.S. dies

Thomas Eric Duncan, the first person diagnosed with Ebola in the United States, died from the virus while in isolation at a Dallas hospital in Texas.

Duncan was diagnosed with the disease on September 30 after contracting it in West Africa. He came to the United States to marry his girlfriend, Louise Troh, who hasn’t shown symptoms but remains in quarantine*.

    5. Russian troops withdrawal ordered

Russian President Vladimir Putin has ordered Russian troops to withdraw to their permanent bases after military exercises in Rostov region near the border with Ukraine, Russian news agencies reported late on Saturday.

The troop pullout* came before an expected meeting between Putin and his Ukrainian counterpart Petro Poroshenko in Milan this week.

    6. Two win Nobel Prize for Peace

One is Muslim, the other Hindu. One a Pakistani, the other Indian. One a schoolgirl just starting out in life, the other a man with decades of experience.

Despite their many differences, Malala Yousafzai, 17, and Kailash Satyarthi, 60, will be forever linked — co-winners of the 2014 Nobel Peace Prize, honored for risking their lives for the rights of children to education and to lives free of abuse.

The Nobel Committee sent a message to the rival nations of India and Pakistan that if two of their citizens can work for a common goal, their governments too could do better in finding common ground.

    7. Photo shows crab measuring 15 meters

A seaside town in Britain might be famed for its oysters, but an incredible image could soon have visitors flocking to Whistable in the hope of catching Britain’s biggest crab.

The photograph, which has been shared online, appears to show a crab that is at least 15.24-meter-wide lurking* in shallow water.

While some insist it is proof of “Crabzilla,” others argue that the shadowy figure is nothing more than an unusually shaped sandbank.(SD-Agencies)
