SZ, HK customs bust drug-trafficking ring

A JOINT operation by Shenzhen and Hong Kong customs last month led to the breakup of a drug-trafficking ring that smuggled drugs into Hong Kong from the mainland via Shenzhen checkpoints, Shenzhen Customs announced yesterday.

Customs officers detained six smugglers, including four Hong Kong residents, and seized 17 kilograms of ketamine, abuse of which can cause severe brain damage.

Customs officers were tipped off in May about the ringleader, surnamed Liu, who bought drugs on the mainland and had vehicles transport them into Hong Kong via traveler checkpoints in Shenzhen.

An ensuing investigation led to a joint raid at several locations, including Huanggang Checkpoint and the Huanggang urban village Sept. 22.

Liu was driving a vehicle with drugs through Huanggang Checkpoint when he was intercepted by customs officers in the raid.

Shenzhen Customs had seized 46 kilograms of drugs by Sept. 30 this year and launched investigations into 22 drug-trafficking cases.
