CAROLINE WOZNIACKI put a huge dent in Maria Sharapova’s bid to finish the season as world No. 1 by outlasting the Russian 7-6 (4), 6-7(5), 6-2 in their marathon opening group match at the WTA Finals on Tuesday.
Following the tense three hour, 13 minute affair, Poland’s Agnieszka Radwanska went into yesterday to claim a 6-2, 6-3 win over Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova to join Wozniacki at the top of the White Group standings.
The Dane had taken advantage of Li Na’s retirement to grab the final qualifying spot in the eight-woman field but it was world No. 2 Sharapova who looked the outsider on Singapore’s purple hardcourt, as some stunning winners were lost in a wave of 76 unforced errors.
“Just a lot more unforced errors than she did,” Sharapova acknowledged.
