Faulty brakes plus speeding caused deaths

THE deadly combination of a faulty braking system and speeding was blamed for a crash that killed three people in a cab on Beihuan Boulevard on Sunday, Shenzhen police said Thursday.

The truck, owned by a logistics company in Shenzhen, went down the viaduct to Beihuan Boulevard from Nanping Expressway at a speed of 54.8 kilometers per hour, according to analysis of surveillance footage. The speed limit on the viaduct is 30 kilometers per hour.

“The truck driver is suspected of speeding and tests showed his vehicle had a problem with its brakes,” Chen Weibin, a police officer with the traffic accident unit of Nanshan traffic police, said Thursday.

The truck driver, surnamed Zhao, lost control of his vehicle, colliding with five cars on Beihuan Boulevard before rolling over a fence and crashing head-on into the cab moving in the opposite direction.
