    Climate accord unveiled

    China and the United States on November 12 issued a joint statement on climate change to strengthen cooperation in tackling the global challenge.

    “We agreed to make sure that international climate change negotiations will reach an agreement in Paris,” President Xi Jinping said.

    U.S. President Barack Obama said the joint announcement on the two countries’ emissions targets was a “historic agreement” and a “major milestone in the U.S.-China relationship.”

    

    HK protesters face arrest

    Occupy Central protesters who camped out on main streets in Hong Kong for more than six weeks face arrest after a court authorized police to help bailiffs* clear them from occupation sites.

    Chief Secretary Carrie Lam also said on November 12 that there was no room for further dialogue with the student-led protesters*.

    On Monday, Hong Kong’s High Court extended injunctions* requiring protesters to leave two of the three protest sites.

    

    China to build 20,000 soccer academies to tackle obesity

    China is to build 20,000 soccer-themed schools across the country in a bid to* tackle obesity and raise the standard of its long underperforming* national team, an education ministry official said.

    Wang Dengfeng, director of the Physical Education, Health and Art Department at the Ministry of Education, said that national student health tests showed that not enough was being done to battle obesity and poor fitness.

    

    Fighter jet crashes

    A People’s Liberation Army* fighter jet crashed in Chengdu, Sichuan, on November 15.

    The pilot ejected* safely but at least seven people were injured at the crash site. The cause of the accident was not known.

    It crashed into a residential compound in Pixian County at about 2 p.m., Xinhua.net reported. At least seven people suffering burns were taken to the county’s People’s Hospital.(SD-Agencies)
