    Shenzhentong app

THE number of mobile phone users who use the Shenzhentong app to pay for their public transportation costs has reached 1.5 million.

According to the Shenzhentong company, the RFID-SIM cards of mobile phone users are embedded with the functions of Shenzhentong cards, with which the users can pay for transportation costs. Phone users can apply for such cards at telecommunication operators without necessarily changing their phone numbers.

Users can also check their balances and top up their Shenzhentong accounts with the Shenzhentong app.

    Jurors appointed

THE standing committee of Nanshan District People’s Congress has appointed four Hong Kong natives as jurors of the district’s people’s court.

The appointment is regarded as a breakthrough in China’s judicial system.

The four jurors are either law professors who graduated from well-known U.S. law schools or company executives with master’s degrees.

    Peacekeeping

TWO doctors of Shenzhen Armed Police Hospital will join the U.N.’s peacekeeping mission in February in Liberia.

The hospital has sent eight doctors on four peacekeeping missions since 2003.

    Drug trafficking

A HONG KONG man was caught last week for attempting to smuggle 2.49 kilograms of crystal meth out of Shenzhen at Luohu Checkpoint, Shenzhen Customs announced yesterday.
