Ex-Nanjing mayor charged with taking ‘massive bribes’
     2014-December-18  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

A FORMER mayor of Nanjing in Jiangsu Province was charged with corruption yesterday amid a widening anti-graft crackdown.

Ji Jianye is accused of using his Party and government positions to take massive bribes in return for favors, the State prosecutor’s office said.

He is one of the highest-ranking officials to be caught in the nationwide anti-corruption campaign.

Ji’s term as Nanjing mayor, which began in 2009, was marred by controversy — including street protests over the mass removal of the city’s beloved plane trees for a subway construction project.

He has already been kicked out of the Party.

Separately, China Resources’ vice president Jiang Wei has been placed under investigation — joining a list of executives at the State-owned conglomerate implicated in corruption inquiries.

Caixin reported yesterday morning that Jiang had been investigated and had not been seen in his office for a couple of months.

His case was related to the alleged illegal loan of 2-billion yuan (US$322 million) made to Shanxi businessman Zhang Xinming, during the acquisition of a coal mine between China Resources and Zhang’s company, a source said.

Several sources said earlier that Zhang had been detained several months ago as part of corruption investigations.

Jiang, 51, had been China Resources’ chief financial officer in Hong Kong and served on the board of the conglomerate’s financial services and energy subsidiaries. (SD-Agencies)
