Prestigious ancient painting ‘comes to life’
     2015-January-15  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

A NEW mobile app developed by the Palace Museum in Beijing makes the characters in the famous ancient painting “Han Xizai Evening Banquet” “come to life.” The 3-D version of the well-known masterpiece restages the splendid and bustling scene of the banquet in the Southern Tang Dynasty (937-975).

“Han Xizai Evening Banquet,” created by well-known, Southern Tang Dynasty painter Gu Hongzhong, is one of the top 10 most prestigious Chinese ancient paintings. It is the only piece created by him that is still in existence today. This painting depicts the complete process of a grand banquet hosted by Han Xizai, a high-ranking official at that time.

According to historical records, the then emperor suspected that Han would overthrow him. Therefore, Han indulged himself in arts and entertainment in order to remove the emperor’s suspicion.

Once the app is launched, a piece of melodious music starts playing along with a voice that provides the historical context of the painting. The user sees a bamboo forest before the 3-D banquet scene gradually comes into view.

The user can drag and zoom in on the picture on the screen for further viewing and read interesting information about different parts of the painting by tapping on the characters or items.

When the user taps and chooses a certain person in the painting, they come to life and move. In addition to the characters, the exquisite musical instruments, household utensils and the furniture are also worth tapping.

It is reported that famous costume designer Jin Tian and members of the celebrated arts group “Han Tang Yue Fu” from Taipei participated in the app’s development to help restore the beauty and elegance of the ancient scene.
