Enjoy a short trip during the long holiday
    2015-02-09  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

SPRING Festival is approaching, and a lot of families may be planning to celebrate by traveling across the country. However, if you don’t like traveling during the busiest period of the year, why not take a short, relaxing trip close to home. Here are some destinations that are perfect for a quick getaway.

    Rongli Village, Shunde

Located in Ronggui Township, Shunde, Rongli Village is just about a two-hour drive from Shenzhen.

This typical Cantonese-style ancient village has a 300-year-old bridge that makes it a popular stop for travelers.

Legend says that there was once a wooden bridge crossing the river that winds through the village. Two old banyan trees were growing at each end of the bridge. Eventually, the bridge grew very old, so it crumbled into the river. The villagers tried to rebuild the bridge frame from the roots of the trees. Gradually, the roots grew so strong, they became the beams that hold up the new bridge, which is now called “tree bridge.”

In addition to the bridge, the village is also an ideal place to enjoy traditional Cantonese cuisine.

Route: Drive to Rongli Village via the Guangzhou-Shenzhen Expressway and G105.

    Jiulong Lake, Guangzhou

Located near the new Guangzhou airport, Jiulong Lake is an up-and-coming resort with beautiful scenery, luxury villas and upscale facilities.

The villas have been built on the mountain so that guests can enjoy a stunning bird’s-eye view of the lake and Wangzi Mountain.

The 18-hole golf course was built on a small peninsula, and one of the holes is in the water. The course is a unique challenge for even the most experienced golfer.

Nearby Huaqiao Township is also a must-see when visiting the resort. There are a lot of Southeast Asian-style buildings in the small town, which offers delicious cuisine from Vietnam, Thailand and Malaysia.

Traditional local delicacies include tofu, fresh vegetables, fish and chicken with wine sauce.

Route: Drive to the resort via the Guangzhou-Shenzhen Expressway, Shenyang-Hainan Expressway, Guangzhou Huancheng Expressway and Beijing-Hong Kong-Macao Expressway.

    Honghai Bay, Shanwei

Located in Shanwei, Honghai Bay is an ideal spot for those who enjoy stunning natural sea views.

The bay is famous for its caves, peninsula and lighthouse. The lighthouse, located on Dengta Island, was built in 1909 and was the largest and most advanced lighthouse in China at that time.

Honghai Bay is not just a seaside resort. There are also many other must-see places in the area, including Fengshan Mazu Temple, Lianhua Mountain, Xuanwu Mountain and Magong Long Beach.

Seafood is a must-try in Shanwei. Other popular local delicacies include crab porridge, meatballs and fruit.

Route: Drive to the bay via the Jihe Expressway and Shenzhen-Shantou Expressway.

    Luofu Mountain, Boluo

Situated in Huizhou, Luofu Mountain is a sacred mountain. It is one of China’s 10 famous Taoist mountains.

During the Eastern Jin Dynasty (317-420), the renowned Taoist Ge Hong once refined elixirs there.

Unfortunately, several of the mountain’s temples disintegrated after the end of the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911). There are many Ge relics to be found on the mountain, including the “Well of Longevity” from which he obtained water, his alchemical kitchen where he refined elixirs and the pond where he washed elixirs.

Recommended local delicacies include fresh vegetables, fried bamboo shoots and pork banquet.

Route: Drive to the mountain via the Meizhou-Guanlan Expressway, Dongguan-Shenzhen Expressway and Guangzhou-Huizhou Expressway.
