    Maritime accidents

SHENZHEN’S maritime accident rate last year was 0.00001 percent, another record low, Shenzhen Maritime Safety Administration said yesterday.

Statistics show that up to 550,000 ships used waters off Shenzhen last year, with 370,000 entering or leaving Shenzhen Port. Cargo turnover was recorded at 223 million tons. Meanwhile, Shenzhen Port recorded 24.037 million TEUs (twenty-foot-equivalent units, a widely used measurement in the container business) in container throughput, making it the third-largest port in the world.

Five and a half on-the-water accidents were recorded, resulting in one death, one sunken ship and direct economic losses of 1.298 million yuan (US$211,055).

    Cyclist killed

A CAR driver ran down and killed a senior riding a bicycle in Longhua New Area on Sunday. The driver fled the scene after the accident, but was caught by police an hour later.

The 60-year-old senior, Li Chengxiang, was near Guihua Primary School when he was hit by the car at about 7 a.m. Sunday. The case is being investigated.
