    Law enforcement

TWO articles in Shenzhen Daily on March 2 caught my attention. One was the tragic accident in which nine people lost their lives and many more were injured when a car hit them at the Shenzhen airport. The victims were standing on an elevated highway watching planes take off and land. Apparently, this is not an area for pedestrians but is part of the main road. The driver reportedly lost control of her car because other drivers were honking.

On the approach to all airports in China, one can see cars parked in areas that are supposed to be for emergency use only. Authorities responsible for road safety around the airports don’t patrol them well. It is only a matter of time before someone smacks into one of these illegally parked cars and we see more deaths.

The other article that caught my attention was that the city’s smoking ban is not being enforced. This is rather obvious, as you can see people smoking at most restaurants in the city. The only thing what will help enforcement is huge fines for the smoker and the establishment.

We need tough law enforcement, not just guys in fancy uniforms.
