Australia wins 5th Cricket WCup title
     2015-March-31  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

AUSTRALIA cemented its status as the world’s top-ranked team in one-day cricket by seeing off New Zealand in the final to clinch their fifth World Cup.

The victory came in front of 93,000 people at the Melbourne Cricket Ground after New Zealand elected to bat and was all out for 183 in 45 overs. Steve Smith hit a four for the winning runs, leaving him on 56 not out. Australia only needed 33.1 overs to finish the chase, reaching 186-3 with Smith’s boundary.

“Unbelievable feeling,” Smith said in a televised interview. “We wanted to play our best games at the end of the tournament.”

Australian captain Michael Clarke, who said he would retire from one-day Internationals after the final, led the attack, hitting 74 runs from 72 balls before being bowled by Matt Henry.

In New Zealand’s innings, captain Brendon McCullum was bowled without scoring, one of four Black Caps out for a duck. Ross Taylor was the second-highest scorer, hitting 40.

“We had our chances, but Australia was obviously the better team,” Taylor said. “We lost wickets at critical times.”

Australia, which lost to New Zealand by a wicket earlier in the tournament, is world champion again, after relinquishing the title to India in 2011. That loss ended a run of three titles for the Australians that started with a victory in England in 1999.

Clarke said the match against New Zealand in Auckland was a turning point for his team, pushing them past Pakistan and defending champion India to reach the final.

Mitchell Starc was named player of the tournament, having taken 22 wickets including McCullum’s today.

“New Zealand have set the standard all tournament but we led it home,” Starc said. “Brendon’s been fantastic all tournament. The fans have been fantastic, to win in front of this many people, there’s nothing like it. Going to enjoy this one for now.”

In the semifinal Thursday, Australia set India a target of 329 runs at the Sydney Cricket Ground, with Mitchell Johnson scoring 27 runs off 13 balls in the closing overs. India was all out on 233 runs in 46.3 overs.

Smith scored 105 runs from 93 balls, hitting 11 fours and two sixes before being bowled by India’s Umesh Yadav, who took 4-72. Smith was Australia’s top run scorer going into the final with 346, including three half-centuries.

The Kiwis defeated South Africa in a close semifinal Tuesday, giving them two more days to rest before the final.

The victory gives Australia momentum going into the Ashes series later this year against England. U.K. bookmaker William Hill said Australia is the 8-11 favorites, meaning a successful US$11 bet would return the original stake plus US$8. England has odds of 15-8, and it’s 20-1 that Australia will win all five matches.
