    Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei

    development plan approved

    Rules for the coordinated development of the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei area were approved by the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee on April 29.

    The main task will be to transfer administrative functions from Beijing to neighboring areas. Priority will be given to traffic management, environmental protection, energy security and industrial upgrades.

    

    McDonald’s supplier fined

    A Beijing company that supplies fries to McDonald’s has been fined a record 3.9 million yuan (US$655,000) for water pollution.

    The penalty imposed on Beijing Simplot Food Processing Co. Ltd. — a joint venture between U.S. agribusiness* giant the J.R. Simplot Company, McDonald’s and the Beijing Agricultural, Industrial and Commerce General Company — is the largest fine ever meted out by Beijing for pollution.

    

    KMT party chief meets Xi

    The leader of Taiwan’s ruling Kuomintang party talked with President Xi Jinping about joining global organizations such as the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB) when they met on Monday.

    Eric Chu’s meeting with Xi, head of the Communist Party of China (CPC), was the first between leaders of the two parties since Kuomintang troops fled to Taiwan at the end of the Chinese civil war in 1949. It was also the first visit to the mainland by a Kuomintang chief since Wu Po-hsiung in 2008.

    

    1st H7N9 human infection reported in Central China

    Central China’s Hubei Province on April 27 confirmed its first human infection of the H7N9 strain of bird flu, the local health authority said.

    A 50-year-old poultry trader and butcher from Luotian County developed symptoms* after contact with infected live chickens, according to the provincial health and family planning commission. He is in a hospital in stable condition, the commission said.(SD-Agencies)
