Internet celeb. prosecuted for running casino
     2015-May-22  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

CHINESE Internet celebrity Guo Meimei was prosecuted Thursday for allegedly running a casino, the Supreme People’s Procuratorate (SPP) said on its official microblog account on weibo.com.

The prosecution was filed by the Procuratorate in Dongcheng District of Beijing to the court of the same district.

According to the indictment, Guo and another suspect Zhao Xiaolai organized gambling activities and should be held criminally liable.

Guo was arrested in August 2014 for allegedly running a casino.

Chinese Criminal Law stipulates that those who run a casino are subject to detention or jail terms of less than three years. In case of serious offenses, the culprit may face three to 10 years of imprisonment.

Guo gained notoriety in China in 2011, when she claimed to be the manager of an organization under a charity, the Red Cross Society of China (RCSC), and openly flaunted her wealth and extravagant lifestyle on social media.

The scandal dealt a major blow to the reputation of the RCSC. The incident and ensuing scandals triggered public concern about embezzlement and improper management of charities. (Xinhua)
