Free rides offered by Didi Kuaidi
     2015-May-25  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

WANT a free ride? Use the Didi or Kuaidi apps today.

The taxi-hailing apps are offering customers in Shenzhen up to two rides worth as much as 15 yuan (US$2.42) each, or about a 9-kilometer trip, today and for the next three Mondays.

On Friday the taxi-hailing firm of Didi Kuaidi announced the 12-city promotion worth 1 billion yuan and valid May 25, June 1, June 8 and June 15.

“The distance between my home and workplace is about 8 kilometers, so the promotion is very convenient for me. Rather than driving or taking the public transportation,” said a resident surnamed Sheng who lives in Futian District.

Besides the basic car-calling function, the company will also offer services like premium cars (Didi Zhuanche), carpooling and designated drivers.

Car-hailing apps have been operating in a legal grey zone in China and in other countries across the world. Cheng Wei, CEO of Didi Kuaidi, said the company is negotiating with transportation authorities to clarify the apps’ legal status.

The transportation administration in Shenzhen said they would modify current taxi rules in order to regulate the use of these car-hailing apps.

Data shows that the demand for taxi service in China hugely exceeds the capacity of existing taxis. Cheng said Didi Kuaidi will adopt a strategy to integrate taxis services in major cities to offer sufficient car service for residents.

“Our goal is that every user can get on a taxi within 3 minutes even during peak hours,” said Cheng.

The taxi-hailing firm operates in 360 cities in China and has 1.35 million drivers. It is now looking for drivers to join the premium car service and carpooling program.
