    Xi meets Suu Kyi

    Party chief and President Xi Jinping called for Myanmar opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi and her party to play a constructive role in fostering a better understanding of China and to view cooperation in a fair and reasonable manner.

    Xi made the remarks during a meeting with Myanmar’s National League for Democracy chairperson Suu Kyi on June 11 at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing.

    

    Zhou Yongkang sentenced to life in prison

    Former security chief Zhou Yongkang was sentenced to life imprisonment for accepting bribes, abusing his power and deliberately disclosing* State secrets by Tianjin No. 1 Intermediate People’s Court on June 11.

    Zhou was also deprived* of his political rights for life and had his personal assets confiscated*.

    The court heard the case May 22. Zhou pleaded guilty and will not appeal*.

    

    Officer’s wife commits suicide

    A police officer’s wife fell to her death a day after her husband died fighting a gunman in North China’s Hebei Province.

    Liu Wenjuan jumped from the sixth floor of a local hotel in the province’s Suning County on June 10. Sources close to police indicate that the woman was distraught* by her husband’s death.

    Her 48-year-old husband, Xue Yongqing, was shot dead by gunman Liu Shuangrui from Xishibao Village of Suning.

    

    Easier entry for Taiwanese

    The Chinese mainland will remove the entry-permit requirement for Taiwan residents, as top political adviser Yu Zhengsheng vowed to boost* exchanges across the Taiwan Straits on Sunday.

    Yu, chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference, announced the plan during a speech at the seventh Straits Forum, the largest annual event for cross-Straits exchanges, in Xiamen in the southeastern province of Fujian.
